The Magic Still Happens Without the Camera

These photographs are of my daughter, taken while she was completely absorbed in exploring at Mudpies and Sprinkles Play Village. She was so busy playing, discovering, and using her imagination that she barely noticed I had my camera with me. Not once did I ask her to look at me or say "cheese."
As both a mum and a photographer, these are the moments I treasure most.
Some of my favourite photographs happen when children forget the camera is there and simply get on with being themselves. Their genuine expressions, little quirks, curiosity, and joy can't be staged—they just happen naturally.
It's moments like these that remind me why I love documentary-style photography so much. Rather than directing every smile or pose, I much prefer to quietly observe and capture childhood as it unfolds. Those real, unfiltered moments tell a story that's far more meaningful than a perfectly posed portrait ever could.
When I look back at these images of my daughter, I don't just see beautiful photographs. I remember her excitement, her concentration, her imagination, and exactly who she was in that moment.
That's what I hope to give every family I photograph—honest memories that feel just as special years from now as they do today.
